Time to Kill, a review

995241_240155519483307_172691054_nA few years back Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez got together to put together a cinematic experience entitled Grindhouse.   The idea was to recreate the atmosphere of the sleazy double features of their youth with original exploitation films of their own.  The resulting movie was something of a flop as many people didn’t share their nostalgia for the double feature format, but on the plus side a resurgence of these period exploitation films followed on the Grindhouse example, the two Machete films and Hobo with a Shotgun to name a few.  With Time to Kill, first time director Brian Williams has made a film that stands easily in the same league as the films of Grindhouse.  This is high praise as Tarantino and Rodriguez are personal heroes of mine, but it is well earned.

From the very beginning Time to Kill achieves the 70s feel it is going for.  Setting the tone for the rest of the film is a cameo from Tromette extraordinaire Debbie Rochon in one of the first scenes.  The soundtrack is packed with amazing songs that give it an authentic old school exploitation vibe. The visual presentation is complete with the many pops and lines that are common with films of this sort.  Beyond the impressive technical achievements, Time to Kill is just a lot of fun to watch.

Ellie Church plays a badass leaving bodies and scorched earth in her wake, on a mission to right a past wrong.  What this means is for the audience is a lot of flying blood.  If the blood gets to be too much for you, there is a bountiful serving of gratuitous nudity including a rather memorable lesbian bubble bath.  On top of that steaming pile of awesome, it is important to mention that the movie also manages to be hilarious, a great example of witch is a psa of sorts that will forever change the way you look at hotdogs.

If you take anything away from this review, let it be that no matter how much I drone on about this film, I will not be able to do it justice.  Do yourself a favor and see Time to Kill as soon as you can.  If you love blood, boobs, and music as much as I do, you won’t be disappointed.
