One Man’s Trash: Red, Reform School Girls, and Sella Turcica

This was my fourth encounter with a Jack Ketchum story, and I have to say that I was a bit   surprised.  In his other stories, Jack shows the depths of human depravity, which he also does here, but this story focuses on the most honorable man you’re likely to encounter.  Ever wonder what a revenge movie would look like without the gratuitous body count?  That’s about what you’ll find in Red.  This isn’t the usual camp I promote, but this is a very good movie.

There was a trailer for this film as well, but it was pointed out that it spoils the movie.  I decided not to include it for that reason.

I’m not going to lie, I didn’t realize this movie was a satire at first.  It’s a women in prison movie on a juvenile scale.  I should have realized how.tongue in cheek it was when you enter the dorms for the first time and not a single girl is wearing more than her underwear.  The underwear themselves point to the farce as well, as it is bikini cuts, teddies, and leather bondage wear as far as the eye can see.  This particular reform school is run by a crooked nurse named Edna that enjoys torturing the girls and trading favoritism for sexual favors.  The new recruits choose not to play ball and the result is a full on riot that feels very deserved by the end of the movie.  This movie is a lot of fun, and is rife with all the gratuitous nudity and girl fights you expect from this kind of film.

I am not sure what I was expecting from my first Fred Vogel story film.  It wasn’t this.  While watching the movie I had to give Fred credit.  It was filmed very well.  The characters were believable but I didn’t like a single one of them.  I enjoy the fact that there are a diverse bunch of characters, such as the heavily tattooed couple, dj ‘gazm’, the clean cut sister, and of course the hard ass brother.  The movie overall felt like all the things that lead up to a good horror film.  The last 10 mins or so are really intense, but the rest drags a bit.
